5 Best Non-Slip Yoga Mats for Hot Yoga

Any hot yoga devotee can attest to the annoyance of having your towel constantly moving and bunching up under your feet. I put up with it for years, just thinking it was just part and parcel of practicing hot yoga. Then I discovered that some (genius!) had invented non-slip yoga mats for hot yoga.

Mind=blown. I immediately invested in a non-slip yoga mat and it seriously felt-heaven sent. Finally, I could actually focus on my hot yoga practice instead of constantly rearranging my towel!

Non-slip yoga mats for hot yoga are fairly common now, but they’re not all created equal.

So let’s check out the best non-slip yoga mats for hot yoga!

It comes in a range of gorgeous, limited-edition designs, it contains no PVC, toxic glues, phthalates, and for every mat that is sold, Plyopic will plant a tree in the Amazon rainforest.

Who this yoga mat is perfect for: Eco-conscious yogi’s who love practicing on a unique, gorgeously designed mat.

3. Ajna Wellbeing Organic Jute Yoga Mat

What’s great about this yoga mat: This extra long yoga mat is made from organic jute fiber and PER (Polymer Environment Resin.) It’s antibacterial, vegan and 100% biodegradable. The surface provides good grip, but because it’s not microfiber, depending on how much you sweat during your practice, you might need a towel (although many people report that this mat provides plenty of grip without the need for a towel.)

Who this yoga mat is perfect for: Yogi’s who prefer a natural, earthy appearance and don’t get particularly sweaty during their hot yoga practice.

4. Gaia Guy Natural Cork + Rubber Yoga Mat

What’s great about this yoga mat: This natural yoga mat is made from natural rubber and sustainable cork, making it incredibly eco-friendly and non-toxic. Additionally, cork is naturally resistant to bacteria, mold and funky odors, which makes this mat a good choice for hot yoga. And cork is about as “non-slip” as you can get. Fair warning – cork and rubber are both relatively heavy, so this mat definitely isn’t the lightest of the bunch – it weighs in at 6.4lbs.

Who this yoga mat is perfect for: Yogi’s who are looking for a natural, sustainable mat that provides an excellent grip (and don’t mind lugging around a heavier mat.)

Things to Consider When Buying a Yoga Mat

When you’re trying to figure out which yoga mat to buy, here are some things to look out for:

Avoid toxic materials…

The majority of the cheap yoga mats you see at big box stores are made with toxic materials including PVC, polyurethane and latex all of which can cause serious health problems.

Go eco-friendly…

Try to choose a yoga mat that contains biodegradable and/or recyclable materials so you’re not contributing to overflowing landfill.

Avoid the cheapest…

When it comes to yoga mats, the cheapest is almost always the worst. While I’m not suggesting that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a yoga mat, you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time in close contact with your mat, so avoid exposing yourself to toxic chemicals and the health risks associated with poorly made, cheap yoga mats.
